Last chance to help ban wild animals in circuses

17.06.11

Following the government's complete u-turn last month, on the issue of whether wild animals are to be banned in circuses, there will be a debate in parliament on Thursday, 23 June on the decision.

We urgently need all those who want to see a ban of wild animals in circuses to email their MP and ask them to speak at the debate in favour of a ban.

Public opinion is clear

The public have made their feelings very clear on this issue. Of more than 10,500 analysed responses to a public consultation during 2010, 94 per cent favoured a ban.

RSPCA director of communications, David Bowles, said:

We already lag far behind the five countries that have already banned the practice of wild animals in circuses (Austria, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Israel and Singapore) and the 13 others that place restrictions on the types of animals that can be used (e.g. Bulgaria, Portugal, Slovakia).

The dithering on this issue has to stop - we call on the government to listen to the public and the members of Parliament and change their position.

We ask anyone wanting to help on this issue to email their MP and ask them to speak in the debate in favour of a ban.

Last chance to take action

People have made it clear that they want to see wild animals in circuses banned and have written to their MPs, the Secretary of State, signed petitions and responded to the consultation.

We're now asking the Prime Minister, David Cameron, to do the right thing. We need your help to do the same to ensure this outdated practice is finally eradicated.

This is the last chance to try and get the government to change their minds on this issue. Mark Pritchard MP, Jim Fitzpatrick MP and Bob Russell MP have called for this debate to call on the government to introduce a ban under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 instead of licensing.

  • Please email your MP and ask them to attend the backbench debate on Thursday, 23 June and vote to to ban the use of wild animals in circuses.
