Fizz & Sherbert’s Rabbit Rescue Story

Rescue rabbits Fizz and Sherbert found their perfect home with Alma and her family. Discover why these curious brothers have everyone laughing.

Two brothers looking for a home

Fizz and Sherbert's mum was among 85 rabbits and guinea pigs rescued from an overcrowded home in January 2024. She gave birth after arriving at RSPCA Sussex North & Brighton Branch, giving the brothers a safe start to life.

Alma, who was 14 at the time, and her 10-year-old brother Charlie were looking for rabbits with their family. When they spotted the four-month-old pair on Find a Pet, they knew they'd found their bunnies.

“They'd never been outside the animal centre before and were very shy at first,” says Alma.

The family brought home pillowcases and boxes carrying familiar scents from the centre and kept to the rabbits' usual routine while they settled in. It didn't take long.

“Within a few days, they were running around the living room and gazing longingly through the patio door windows!”

Before

Part of the family

As Fizz and Sherbert grew in confidence, their personalities quickly appeared. The brothers love exploring the garden, chasing each other and performing joyful leaps and twists known as binkies. They’re very close – if something scares them, they'll run straight to each other.

They're also curious about everything their family does, particularly if food or cardboard boxes are involved.
“They love boxes so much,” says Alma. “When we're trying to watch TV, we'll hear nibbling sounds as they rip through the cardboard to make more holes. You can just see their noses poking out!”

Rabbits are one of the most neglected pets in the UK, mainly because people don’t always understand what they need to thrive.

“I'm totally mesmerised by them"

For Alma, the best time of day is hanging out with Fizz and Sherbert. Sometimes she sits with them in their enclosure, other evenings, the bunnies join the family in the living room. They can go from racing around at top speed to lying together quietly and grooming each other.

“When people say, ‘Oh, rabbits are boring,’ I tell them, ‘You’ve clearly not met many rabbits – they’re so entertaining!” says Alma. “They bring a lot of laughs to our lives. It's so nice to come home to them. I'm not alone when they're around.”

Whether they're investigating something new, chasing a bedtime biscuit or getting under everyone's feet during cleaning, Fizz and Sherbert have made themselves very comfortable.
