We welcome acceptance that horseracing has to change

Our response to Grand National course alterations

We cautiously welcome the fact that the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) and management at Aintree have accepted that change is necessary for the safety and welfare of racehorses taking part in the Grand National.

The proposed changes to the course announced on Monday, 15 August are positive and constructive and we feel the Aintree management team has taken heed of our input.

'A positive step forward'

RSPCA equine consultant, David Muir, said:

Raising the landing zone at Becher’s Brook is undoubtedly a positive step forward. However the RSPCA remains concerned about drop fences.

We will continue to monitor the situation and see how horses cope on landing over the fence.

I will visit the course to see the work in progress and look forward to the BHA’s input before commenting further.
