The open day will run from 10.30am until 4pm on Saturday, 20 August and celebrates the centre’s 50 years of providing care for wild animals and birds.

The wildlife rehabilitation centre itself will be open on Saturday from 11am until 1pm and again from 2pm to 3.30pm.

A great family day out

Throughout the day, there will be games and activities, woodland walks and trails, woodland crafts, various stalls, a tombola, a raffle and storytelling for children.  If people feel peckish there will be a barbecue at lunchtime and refreshments throughout the day.

Fiona Cannings, facilities manager at Mallydams, said:

We just want everyone to have a great family day out at Mallydams and give them the rare opportunity to see inside our rehabilitation centre.

Mallydams is as much about wildlife education as it is about rehabilitation and we hope that visitors will learn lots about wild animals and birds while they enjoy themselves.

Providing specialist care for wildlife

Mallydams Wood staff have set themselves an ambitious target of raising £50,000 in 2011. £1,000 for every year of the centre’s history so it is hoped that the open day will help towards achieving this target.

Fiona added:

We have set ourselves a real challenge, but if we reach our goal by the end of the year, the money will go towards employing the additional staff which we need to help us cope with the thousands of wild animals which come through our doors each year.

We always need more staff at times when there are higher intakes of certain animals, for instance in the spring when we have lots of orphaned animals like hedgehogs, so the money really will mean that we can help to give more animals the specialist care they need.

Can you help?

People can help Mallydams reach their £50,000 target by making a donation, joining the Mallydams Anniversary Facebook page or joining one of Mallydams Wood's golden anniversary events.
