This little piggy needs a new home
22.07.11
We're looking for homes for four piglets born to a mum who was found wandering on the M25 in January.
The pig was rescued by us after bringing the M25 to a standstill. She was taken to our Southridge Animal Centre near Potters Bar. A new home was found for the pig and soon after she produced eight piglets.
The pig’s new owner, Becky Pinter, said:
She was such a big pig that it was not noticeable that she was pregnant, so the piglets were a surprise – a very welcome one!
Could you offer a home to these piglets?
Becky is now going to keep four of the piglets with their mum, but we're looking to find homes for the other four, who are now nine weeks old and already quite big.
Southridge Animal Centre manager, Anna White, said:
We would love to hear from anyone with a smallholding or some land who is happy to take on some lovely, friendly pigs.
Anyone interested in offering these pigs a forever home is asked to contact our Southridge Animal Centre on: 0300 123 0704.
Did you know?
- In general, a pig's mood is indicated by its tail. A curly tail indicates that the pig is 'happy' and 'content'. When 'unhappy' or agitated it uncurls the tail which hangs limp or gets tucked between its legs.
- The structure of the pig eye is similar to that of humans in many ways; pigs and humans have similar eyeball size, suggesting similar ability to function in dim/dark conditions.
- A pig can run a seven-minute mile.
- Most teenagers are used to hearing their parents complain their bedroom is a ‘pigsty’ but real pigs actually like to keep clean. In fact, the pig divides its pen into sleeping, feeding and defecating areas.
- Pigs can not sweat because they have no sweat glands. They roll around in the mud to cool their skin.
- When frightened, a pig barks very much like a dog.
Think Pig
Pigs are highly intelligent, inquisitive animals who face a range of welfare issues that most people are just not aware of.
Our Think Pig campaign raises awareness of standard pig farming practices across Europe which mean that the majority of pigs have to endure unacceptable living conditions that cause them great suffering.
