Supporting Better Dairy

The campaign to improve the lives of Europe’s dairy cows

Milk, butter and cheese can be a daily part of many people’s diet, yet despite the lovely image of black and white cows roaming a field, there are concerns about the welfare of Europe's dairy cows.

That’s why Ben & Jerry’s, Compassion in World Farming, WSPA with the support of the RSPCA and many other animal protection organisations are working together on this important issue.

Specific EU regulations already safeguard other farm animals but dairy cows have no such protection, meaning that welfare standards vary greatly across the EU, with some suffering from poor health and inadequate housing.

The ‘Supporting Better Dairy' campaign aims to introduce EU-wide legislation that will set standards to protect the welfare of 20 million dairy cows and we need your action to help make this happen…

What the RSPCA is doing for dairy cows in the UK

In the UK around 1.8 million dairy cows are farmed for dairy products each year and the RSPCA continues to work closely with the industry to improve welfare standards.

Just some of the working groups that the RSPCA is represented on include:

  • Cattle health and welfare group
  • Red Tractor technical advisory committee
  • Dairy cow genetics advisory forum

Our work to date with the industry has already achieved the development of a UK dairy cow welfare strategy

We've pledged to increase the number of animals reared under higher welfare systems.

Will you take our pledge?
