Animals that have been poisoned
Sometimes wild birds or other animals are found dead and poisoning may be suspected.
Poisoning may be as a result of:
- Deliberate illegal poisoning. (Baits laced with pesticide are sometimes illegally laid out for wild birds and other animals. The bodies of dead rabbits, lambs or pigeons are often used. These may be cut open, pegged down and laced with poisonous powder, liquid or pellets.)
- The possible unforeseen effects of the legal use of a pesticide. (Products are tested before being granted regulatory approval but sometimes problems come to light later.)
The government runs a Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme. This scheme investigates cases of suspected pesticide poisoning involving wild animals and companion animals. When a possible poisoning incident is discovered, this can be reported on freephone 0800 321 600.
It is important to note that:
- The dead animal, bird or bait should not be touched - some poisons can pass through the skin.
- Details of the location will be required.
- The evidence may be covered to make it safe, but only if this will not disturb it.
If a pet or another animal shows signs of poisoning (e.g. loss of co-ordination, breathing difficulties or convulsions) seek help immediately from a vet. The vet should be asked to report any suspected poisoning to the Wildlife Incident Investigation Scheme on 0800 321 600.
Caution:- Handling of any animal either domestic, wild, dead or alive may be potentially hazardous. Obvious dangers include bites, scratches and general hygiene issues. Common sense should be applied in all instances and, if unsure, seek additional advice or assistance. Personal hygiene should be taken into consideration after handling any animal whether it’s domestic, wild, dead or alive.
