The Animal Welfare Act applies to all vertebrates that are under the control of man - including non-domestic snakes, tortoises, lizards, fish, mammals and birds. As with other vertebrates, their welfare needs must be met.

Recognising the specialist needs of primates, the government set up a primate working group to develop a code of practice for keeping these animals appropriately. One of our wildlife scientists was a member of this group. The code was put out to public consultation in September 2009 and is expected to come into force in early 2010.

We've produced care sheets for some of the more common non-domestic animals.
