Sainsbury's double range of higher welfare chicken
Freedom Food is the RSPCA's farm assurance and food labelling scheme dedicated to improving the welfare standards of the one billion farm animals reared for food each year in the UK.
Sainsbury's has announced that it is more than doubling its range of chicken from Freedom Food approved farms, to meet the increasing demand for higher welfare birds. Despite concerns over reduced consumer spending, sales of higher welfare chicken has continued to grow, partly as a result of Jamie Oliver and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's high profile campaigns.
Sainsbury's has said that they are selling 60 per cent more free range, organic and higher welfare birds, with sales expected to continue growing over the coming months. A third of the supermarket's total stock no longer comes from standard systems and they have announced that they will eventually phase out chickens from these systems entirely to ensure all its suppliers meet RSPCA welfare standards.
Jamie Oliver said he is, "...delighted that Sainsbury's has made this commitment. They listened to Hugh and I and also to the hundreds of thousands of customers who have started to seriously consider animals' well-being when doing the weekly shop." Telegraph, 7 August 2008.
