The Hastings Wild Things
In November 2010, Mallydams received a lottery grant of £245,938 as part of the Big Lottery Fund’s Access to Nature grant programme. The grant is helping to fund our Hastings Wild Things project which aims to inspire children and teens to care about the natural world and boost their self-esteem through practical outdoor activities and education.
The Hastings Wild Things project allows young people and young parents to learn about the natural world in an outdoor environment, for free.
Providing opportunities for young people
Come and explore our wonderful woodland, find out about wildlife and learn new skills. Take part in conservation work; learn how to create habitats for animals and how to use tools safely.
Gain certificates in a wide variety of skills from working together, planning a task and working safely, to creating a habitat and safeguarding wildlife. You will learn about wildlife which will be valuable should you wish to work with animals in the future.
Fantastic activities include badger watching, den building, cooking on a woodland fire, making animal homes, woodland games, night walks, animal friendly barbecues, creating wildlife habitats, overnight nature visits, learning woodland conservation skills and much more.

Alternatively if you have anybody working with you from school, another service or organisation, you can ask them to call on your behalf.
Opportunities for young parents and their children
Join our natural play and learning activities in the woodland and in the interactive education centre. Learn about the woodland and wildlife, and have lots of fun outdoors (and indoors if it’s too cold or wet to be out!)
Meet other young parents whilst you play alongside your children, bring your friends and spend time together enjoying being outdoors doing organised activities and games. There are workshops that run for several weeks as well as taster sessions.
We provide nappy changing facilities at the education centre and a wooden boardwalk making it easy to take buggies into the woods. There is no cost involved, and if you haven’t got outdoor clothing we can help with that too!
