How can you help?

Ask your retailer...

...If you see rabbit meat for sale, please ask the retailer whether the rabbits that produced the meat were farmed and, if so, ask about the conditions in which they were reared.

In particular, you might like to ask about some of the key farmed rabbit welfare issues and ask what they are doing to try to ensure that these are avoided. If you buy farmed rabbit meat, please choose only meat from those reared in higher welfare systems such as enriched group pens, and refuse to buy meat from rabbits that were reared in cages.

If more consumers insist on higher welfare products, more retailers will sell them, more farmers will be encouraged to improve their farming practices, and more farm animals will benefit.

Put pen to paper...

...If you, like the RSPCA, are concerned about the welfare of farmed rabbits, please also consider writing to your local MP and to:

The Rt. Hon. Caroline Spelman MP
Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs
Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs
Nobel House
17 Smith Square
LONDON SW1P 3JR.

Please write concisely in your own words, mentioning some of the key farmed rabbit welfare issues and some of the ways in which you feel improvements could be made.

If you are concerned about farm animal welfare, you may like to learn about the welfare of some other types of farm animals.

We've pledged to increase the proportion of animals reared
under higher welfare systems.

Will you take our pledge?
