How can you help?
Use your power as a consumer...
...When you buy meat, please only purchase turkey meat from birds that have been reared under higher conditions of animal welfare, for example Freedom Food, free-range or organic labelled products.
Improving the law to protect farm animals, whilst very important, can be a slow and often frustrating process. You as a consumer, on the other hand, have enormous power to bring about more rapid change to improve turkey welfare.
If more consumers insist on higher welfare products, more supermarkets will stock them, more farmers will be encouraged to improve their farming practices, and more farm animals will benefit.
Go straight to the source...
...Write to your local supermarket’s Head Office and ask what standards of welfare they require on the farms from which they source their turkey meat.
You can also help by...
...writing, in your own words, to your local MP and to:
The Rt. Hon. Caroline Spelman MP
Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs
Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs
Nobel House
17 Smith Square
LONDON SW1P 3JR.
Tell them of your concerns and ask them to improve the welfare of turkeys by introducing stricter, specific laws to protect turkey welfare.
If you are concerned about farm animal welfare, why not learn about the welfare of other types of farm animals.
