Some of the ways we are working to give beef cattle a better quality of life include:
RSPCA welfare standards for beef cattle
Our scientific team works to develop RSPCA welfare standards for all the main types of farm animals, and we encourage as many beef cattle farmers as possible to adopt them. These detailed documents are intended to represent ‘best practice’ in the care and welfare of beef cattle and are used within the RSPCA’s Freedom Food scheme and by many other bodies and organisations. They cover every aspect of the animals’ lives, including feed and water provision, living conditions, management, health care, transport, and humane slaughter/killing. The standards are designed to ensure that all animals reared according to the requirements have everything they need for a really good quality of life.
Welfare of veal calves
Our dairy cattle pages include further information about our work to ensure that as many veal calves as possible are reared under humane conditions and not exported live from the UK.
