All farm animals deserve a humane end to their lives, and we're working in a number of different ways to try to ensure this. We're just as concerned about how farm animals are transported, handled and slaughtered/killed as we are about how they're treated during their time on the farm.
Animals can be particularly vulnerable at the time of killing. It's vital that they're treated considerately and killed humanely, which includes being stunned effectively so that they remain unconscious and can't feel pain before being slaughtered.
CCTV in slaughterhouses
Installing CCTV in abattoirs is a requirement of our own welfare standards for farm animals. We welcomed the Government announcement that from May 2018, CCTV would be required in every slaughterhouse in England in all areas where live animals are present.
We campaigned for mandatory CCTV in slaughterhouses for a number of years, as it should help to better safeguard the welfare of animals at the time of slaughter.
