End wild animals in circuses

We don't believe any animal should be subjected to the conditions of circus life. These animals often experience:

  • Regular transport
  • cramped and bare temporary housing
  • forced training and performance
  • loud noises and crowds

The damage to their welfare is likely to be significant, and scientific research has shown that circus life can have a harmful effect on the welfare of many species.

Will wild animals be banned from circuses in England?

The Wild Animals in Circuses Act, which bans the use of wild animals in circuses in England, comes into force in January 2020 when current licenses expire. We would like to thank all our supporters who after many years of campaigning, have helped us make this happen.

Wales announces ban on wild animals in circuses

In July 2019, a Bill to end the use of wild animals in circuses was laid before the National Assembly for Wales. Following a consultation response, RSPCA Cymru provided oral evidence in September 2019.

After 13 years of campaigning, we expect the change in law to be enforced in late 2020.
