Leave a gift in your Will
A lasting legacy of love for the animals of South West Somerset.
Why should I leave a gift in my Will?
You can make a lasting difference to the lives of future generations of animals in South West Somerset by leaving a gift in your Will.
What types of gift can I leave in my Will?
There are three main types of gift you can leave in your Will:
- A percentage gift (otherwise known as a residuary gift). This is where you set aside a percentage of your remaining estate, after funeral expenses, debts and other gifts have been paid. As you may not know the final value of your estate, you may find it easier to apportion gifts to your chosen beneficiaries (individuals or charities) in this way.
- A cash gift (otherwise known as a pecuniary gift). This is a gift of a specified sum of money. All gifts make a real difference to the animals we care for in South West Somerset, but it is worth remembering that the eventual value of this type of gift is likely to be impacted by inflation.
- A specific legacy. This is a gift of a specific named item, for example, property, a car, or jewellery.
Unrestricted gifts
Many people choose to leave an unrestricted or general gift. This means that you do not specify exactly how the charity uses your gift. This is the most helpful type of gift, because it allows us to use it in the most efficient and effective way, wherever the need is greatest.
How do I write a Will or make an amendment to a Will?
You can either include your gift to ‘RSPCA South West Somerset Branch CIO’ in a new Will, or add it to your existing Will using a Codicil (a document which specifies alterations to your Will).
We recommend speaking to a legal adviser when making or amending a Will, but you could use the following suggested wording, depending on the type of gift you want to leave:
“I give the sum of £______ [or specify a percentage of your estate, or the name of a specific item that you own] to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals South West Somerset Branch CIO, 64 Bridge Street, Taunton TA1 1UD (Registered Charity No. 1209359) for its general purposes and I declare that the receipt of the honorary treasurer or other proper officer of the said Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals charity for the time being shall be a full and sufficient discharge for the said legacy.”
If you choose to leave a gift to us in your Will, please be sure to specify “RSPCA South West Somerset Branch CIO.” As we are a separate charity from the national RSPCA, using our full branch name helps to avoid any confusion.
