Macclesfield, South East Cheshire & Buxton Branch

How we help local animals

Our branch, one of 175 such local RSPCA organisations, covers a notable part of Cheshire extending into Derbyshire to encompass Buxton. Created in 1989 in our present form, we lie within the national society’s Northern Region, and serve the animals within our boundaries. We operate as an all volunteer, autonomous, self-funding foundation, based on the rules, regulations and guidelines of the national society.

Geographically, the branch covers a very large area which is bounded roughly by a line running from Styal near Manchester Airport, east to Poynton then across to slightly and east of Buxton, south-west to Scholar Green, then to Alsager and Sandbach before running north back to Styal. Alderley Edge, Buxton, Congleton, Macclesfield, Prestbury and Wilmslow are larger communities within our boundaries.

We support the work of the RSPCA Inspectorate operating in the North region area and Greater Manchester Animal Hospital through liaison with inspectors, animal collection officers and the staff at the society’s regional headquarters in Leeds. This involves taking in and caring for animals rescued by inspectors or which are removed by voluntary arrangement with owners who are unable to guarantee an acceptable level of care or quality of life.

Additionally, we fund the temporary placement of these and other animals in kennels, catteries and other appropriate facilities whilst their rehoming or fostering is sought from within the community. We fund and oversee veterinary treatment for animals in our care, run animal neutering programmes and provide ‘home visitors’ to check on compatibility of animal and potential adopter in our branch area for our animals and those from any other RSPCA branch.

Joining the RSPCA makes you part of this important animal charity at both national and local branch levels.

The branch does not have it’s own animal centre, we rely on fosterers and private boarding so space is limited. Our priority are the animals that come in via the Inspectors; abuse, cruelty, neglect and abandonment cases.

We also promote responsible pet ownership through neutering and microchipping campaigns.
