  • We are developing a new charity retail network in Oxfordshire & Reading.
  • Our first shop unit will be in Didcot, Oxfordshire.
  • Vacancy: Charity Shop Manager (full time) – Didcot, Oxfordshire

Job Description / Purpose

The Shop Manager will be responsible for all of the daily aspects of managing the shop, including:

  • Maximising weekly income (sales, Gift Aid income and cash donations) and managing controllable expenditure.
  • Achieving weekly income targets.
  • Recruiting, training, managing and developing the Didcot volunteer team.
  • Managing, training and developing the Assistant Shop Manager (part time).
  • Encouraging, receiving and sorting donations of stock.
  • Managing all relevant paperwork and regular banking.

General duties

  • Promote a positive image of RSPCA Oxfordshire & Reading Branch by maintaining a high level of customer and donor engagement at all times.
  • Ensure compliance with RSPCA standards and policies, relevant legislation and best practice, in all aspects of the role.
  • Foster the high standards of performance, organisation, honesty and  integrity from the Didcot shop team (staff and volunteers).
  • Contribute to the development of retail ideas, innovations and practice.
  • Promote fundraising opportunities within the shop.
  • Promote animal welfare opportunities within the shop.
  • Carry out any other duties, as required, commensurate with the Shop Manager role.

Retail duties

  • To achieve agreed budgeted income and shop net profit targets.
  • To ensure Gift Aid is being promoted to all donors and customers.
  • To ensure that a high level of customer engagement is delivered.
  • To ensure all available selling/product space is used effectively in order to maximise sales.
  • To maintain high presentation standards (windows and shop interior).
  • To maintain high levels of shop housekeeping and cleanliness.
  • To actively encourage the public to donate good quality stock/donations.
  • To ensure there is a constant daily flow of stock onto the shop floor.
  • To comply with GDPR by keeping customers’ personal details locked away and destroyed as necessary.
  • To ensure that shop floor stock density is maximised at all times.
  • To price stock in accordance with local market forces whilst maximising higher value stock donations.
  • To manage waste disposal effectively via waste collections and tip visits in order to ensure high standards of Health & Safety in the shop.
  • To actively recruit, train and develop volunteers.
  • To provide training and support for the Assistant Manager (part-time).
  • To organise the weekly staff/volunteer rota to ensure that the shop runs effectively.
  • To ensure that all administration is completed correctly and promptly.
  • To ensure that all financial, cash handling and security procedures are adhered to, with reference to Branch policies.
  • To hold the shop keys, ensuring that the shop is secure whenever it is left unattended.
  • To ensure that opening / trading hours are strictly adhered to.
  • To ensure that Branch HR Policy and Procedures are adhered to at all times.
  • To build positive internal and external relationships in order to maximise income for the charity.
  • To ensure compliance with the Branch Health & Safety Policy (including fire safety, risk assessments and security procedures) and relevant legislation.

Donations/Stock

  • Recruit and train a team of volunteers to support the stock/donation activities of the Didcot shop, including volunteer stock collectors and stock sorters.
  • Organise successful methods of attracting good quality stock, including advertising on social media.
  • Encourage and manage the daily rotation of stock in order to maximise customer interest.
  • Organise and promote seasonal stock donation campaigns at key times of the year.

Volunteer Recruitment and Development

  • Identify volunteering opportunities and recruit new retail volunteers, as required.
  • Support and motivate existing volunteers, providing any necessary training and development.
  • Ensure that regular and effective communication takes place with all volunteers.
  • Keep clear records of volunteers personal information and any training that they have undertaken.

Additional Information

  • Hours of Work: 35 hours per week (5 days x 7 hours per day). The Shop Manager will be expected to work weekends on a roster basis with the Assistant Manager.
  • Hourly rate: £13.72 per hour.
