What's in a colour?

What's in a colour? image

Everybody has a different idea about this but the facts are undeniable - whether black cats are thought of as bad or good luck, they still take far longer to be adopted than their more brightly coloured kin. We have found this to be especially true with regards to kittens.

Ginger cats, tortie cats, tabby cats, all are in high demand. In litters with several black kittens and a single 'colourful' kitten, you can guess which one is most craved by potential adopters. However, the truth of it is that the colour of your cat will make not determine their personality.

Kittens are cute, demanding, loving and lots of fun. But this has nothing to do with that kitten's colour. Black kittens are just as wonderful to bring into your heart and home as ginger kittens, or grey kittens. Every year we see this issue firsthand, particularly with regards to grey kittens. If we have one grey kitten in our care, there will always be many people who want to adopt that kitten. If it is already reserved, those people often leave the Centre empty-handed, without viewing any of our other lovely kittens.

You may find one black cat who doesn't enjoy fuss and will never be a lap cat, however an almost identical black cat may be the most loving cat around. The point is, don't choose a cat for your family based on the colour, choose the cat based on which personality will fit best into your home.

Take Harmony (pictured) for example. She came into us as a stray after she was found to have given birth to her kittens under a bush. She spent time raising her kittens in a foster home and her fosterer told us what a loving, friendly cat Harmony is. She really is a gem, and yet now that she is back at the Centre time and again she is not chosen.

Black cats are often overlooked and can spend months in rehoming Centres looking for homes. Of course, all the cats in our care need homes, however if you are thinking of adding a cat to your family why not consider a black cat? After all, what better feeling in the world than giving a home to an animal that has been needing one for so very long.
