José, a sociologist, has devoted her working life to social research and education and has been dedicated to bringing animal protection issues into her teaching, research and publications.
José was senior researcher at the former London Research Centre from 1986–1992, with a responsibility for covering London’s environmental policies on behalf of the London boroughs. She was also Senior Lecturer in Environmental Sociology at the now University of Bedfordshire for 10 years until 2002, responsible for developing new undergraduate programmes.
José has written a wide range of publications on the issue of animals and the environment and is a member of the British Sociological Association, the International Society for Anthrozoology, and the Association of Lawyers for Animal Welfare.
José joined the RSPCA in 1977 and has campaigned tirelessly to improve animal protection. A committed vegetarian for 40 years, José was elected to the Council of the Vegetarian Society in 1992 and was elected Chair of the Society’s Research Section.
