Online voting opens for "pawfect" animal snaps

Online voting has opened today for the RSPCA People’s Choice Award.

Daniel Ball, 16, Essex, Leafy lizard

Cute cats, lively lizards and a colourful caterpillar are among the fourteen images of animals snapped by young people on their mobile phones and tablets. These have been entered into our People’s Choice Award, and the public get to choose their favourite animal pic.

The People’s Choice Award features photographs from the Mobile Phone and Devices category of our prestigious RSPCA Young Photographer Awards, with all entrants aged 18 years old or younger.

An official judging panel – made up of wildlife experts, including our vice president Chris Packham and several industry professionals – announced the overall winners of our Young Photographer Awards at a ceremony in December 2017.

Now it’s the public’s turn to pick their winner in a special online poll of photos featuring three age groups of Under 12s, 12-15s and 16-18 year olds.

Voters have just two weeks, from today, to choose their favourite photograph taken on a mobile phone.

The Mobile Phone and Devices category was launched as part of our Young Photographer Awards 2017 competition, to reflect the fact that many young people capture great images on their mobile phones and tablets. It provides a fresh challenge and opens up the photography competition to anyone with a mobile or device. It’s a category aimed at all skill levels, from beginners to professionals.

The awards moving with the times

Chris Packham, said:

It’s exciting to see the awards move with the times, with this year’s new mobile device category. It’s a great way of making the competition accessible to virtually everyone.

Reflecting on the strength of the competition this year, Chris added:

It’s nice to see so many photos of day-to-day animals in such a strong competition. It needs real imagination to make commonplace species interesting, showing that the photographer has been really innovative.

Anita Morris, who organises the Young Photographer Awards, said:

As so many young people have a mobile phone and thousands of creative pictures are taken everyday, we think this category opens up opportunities for those who perhaps wouldn’t normally enter a photography competition to share their best animal pics.

The images entered into the RSPCA People’s Choice Award are wonderful. These photos show bags of character, originality and really capture the personality of the animal.

There are some really lovely images this year so we're handing the decision over to the public and giving them the chance to pick their favourite. Online surveys are the perfect vehicle for this and with just a couple of clicks it’s nice and easy to vote too.
