Horror footage: Men torture rat and launch out of a cannon

22.05.2017

Horrific footage showing a rat being forced into a metal pipe before being launched into the air using a makeshift cannon is being investigated by us.

The video - which has been viewed more than 5,000 times on Facebook - shows one man in a garage leaning into a plastic dustbin before pulling out a grey and white rat by its tail using a pair of pliers.

He and another man are then filmed trying to shove the rat inside a metal exhaust pipe while the rat can be seen struggling and heard squeaking in fear as he tries to escape and the men taunt it with expletives.

As the rat tries to bite his blue-gloved hand one of the men says: “Get him in there boy, whack him on the head, knock the **** out!” before using a crowbar to hit the rat on the head and poke it inside the piping.

Attaching the pipe to a compressor to form a makeshift cannon he then runs outside, laughing, before blowing the rat metres into the air above.

Our inspectors are appealing for anyone who might recognise the men in the video or where it was shot to contact them.

Special Operations Unit chief inspector Mike Butcher said:

This footage is absolutely awful. It would have been a terrifying ordeal for the poor rat. You can see him being picked up by his tail clamped in a pair of pliers and he is struggling to free himself. You can hear him squeaking and trying to wriggle free.

The men then push and poke the rat for more than a minute as they try to force him into the piping.

As the rat tries to free himself one man knocks him over the head using a crowbar before they shove his little body inside the pipe. They can they all be heard laughing as they run outside and blow the rat high into the air. It’s really disturbing.

It appears from the background that these men work in a garage - possibly as mechanics. It is a large workshop. The outside area of the garage is quite distinctive as all the other units are bright red and we are hoping that someone will recognise either the men or the area where they are.

Rats are still living creatures

Mike added:

Some people see rats a vermin - but they are still living creatures that feel fear and pain and it is completely unacceptable to treat them in this way.

This little rat is grey and white so there is always the potential that it is someone’s pet that has escaped. We just don’t know. We would just ask that anyone who recognises the men or where they are to contact us as soon as possible.

Anyone with information about the video is urged to contact us on 0300 123 8018.
