RSPCA seeks new homes for cats in its care

The RSPCA Stapeley Grange cattery is urgently trying to find new homes for cats and kittens in its care as it is currently full to capacity.

The cattery, like many centres across the country is currently overwhelmed with cats and kittens and desperately needs to find them new ‘forever’ homes.

As of end of July we had 71 cats and kittens at the centre, and as a result no more can be taken in, until new homes are found for the current residents.

Now staff are urging people not to buy cats on the internet or from a pet stores, but to please visit Stapeley Grange in London Road, and give a rescue cat a second chance instead.

The centre had held an Open Day on June 29 and it was hoped that during the event, visitors would take the chance to rehome some of the many cats and kittens in their care.

But sadly although the Open Day was a complete success - new homes were only found for two kittens - and as a result the cattery is still full.

Lee Stewart, centre manager, said: “We are once again full to capacity and we are struggling to take in any more cats or kittens until we can find new homes for those already with us. Once we have space it means we can then take in more - I just hope anyone who is considering getting a cat or kitten comes to us first, we have so many lovely felines all desperately in need of a loving new home.

“When we are full, it is also tough for our team to say no to our inspectors who are often struggling to find temporary refuge for their abandoned or mistreated cats.”

The Open Day raised a staggering £5,400 and staff and volunteers said this was thanks to the amazing support of the local community.

Lee added: “The success really was down to the local community, those that joined us on the day and those who supported us with prizes for our raffle, particularly Brynteg Holiday Home Park who provided us with the top raffle prize - a short holiday for six people at their fabulous park in Llanrug, those that donated cakes, sandwiches, hot dogs and small prizes for the kids games, Wyche Dog Training, Nantwich Police, Greenbank Company of Archers, RSPCA Crewe and Nantwich Branch and South Cheshire Ferret Rescue.

“We were also joined by writer Tom Leonard who judged the Branch’s dog show, which was fantastic.

“We would also like to thank the many volunteers who turned out in force and once again helped us put on an incredible event. Our volunteers are amazing and give us so much of their time - not only at such events but also on daily basis with the care of thousands of animals we treat each year.

“And on top of all this we were also presented with a cheque for £500 from the Wirral and Cheshire Badger Group to support the work our wildlife hospital does with orphaned, sick and injured badgers in the surrounding counties.”
