Derek is a 4 year old Lurcher cross who came into RSPCA care as part of an on-going welfare investigation relating to hunting. He was originally with us back in 2014 before being transferred to another RSPCA after we moved to the new centre is Stalmine. He was then returned to us in September 2015. Although he settled well in our kennels, he was moved into a foster home with one of our volunteers and has been there now for over 6 months. We were really unsure as to how Derek would settle in a home environment having never lived in one before but we have been pleasantly surprised at how well he has done. Derek does have his issues though but these are to be expected considering his background however they are being managed and he is improving week by week. Derek does show signs of separation anxiety but is now crate trained meaning he feels a lot more comfortable when he is left. This has been a massive hurdle to combat but now Derek can be left for over 3 hours without any problems. Derek is a very intelligent dog who knows basic commands and is generally eager to learn and please. Derek needs to be the only pet in the household and due to his hunting background would not be allowed off lead. He walks well on a harness and lead and he absolutely adores going on trips in the car! On arrival, Derek was initially very vocal and defensive around dogs but has improved greatly in the last few months although this training will need to be continued in his new home. Derek is a very energetic boy who is very people orientated and loves to be in the company of people. A large garden, fully fenced garden is also required as Derek has bursts of energy and loves to run around! An experienced dog owner who has experience with large breeds is essential as Derek will need plenty of support whilst he continues to adjust to life outside of kennels. If you would like to arrange to meet Derek, please contact the centre on 01253 703000 and ask for Hannah.

Please note the centre does not re-home animals during the Christmas holiday period. We prioritise animals we have rescued from cruelty & neglect, which may mean we cannot take in unwanted pets. Unfortunately we do not have facilities for rabbits at the moment. Unable to accept dogs until further notice.
