End the keeping of primates as pets
It’s time for a ban
Fifteen European countries have already introduced bans on keeping primates as pets, for either all or some species, because primates don’t make good pets. It’s time for Wales to join that list.
It is near impossible to meet the welfare needs of monkeys and other primates in a domestic setting.
We now call on the Welsh Government to also introduce a complete ban on the keeping and trade of primates as pets.
What it’s really like to have a pet monkey
Lorraine Barrett, former Assembly Member for Cardiff South and Penarth once had a pet monkey. She describes it as the ‘biggest mistake of my life.’
It must’ve been the early eighties. I saw this monkey called ‘Spike’ in a pet shop, tied up with a collar. I just felt desperately sorry for him, I’d stand there when the shop was shut and look through the door, just watching and thinking what a miserable life he had.
I couldn’t stand it any longer. I just knew I had to rescue him.
It became one of the most traumatic experiences of her life.
