Tommy Hilpigger was taken into RSPCA care after his owner signed him over due to not meeting his welfare standards. He was taken to a farm in Derby and is now waiting for someone to take him to his forever home.
The farm caring for Tommy Hilpigger has said that he's a a very kind boy, and gets on well with other pigs so for this reason we are looking for a home with at least one other pig. Pigs love to root, and spend approximately 20% of their time rooting, so it's important that Tommy is provided with the opportunities to do so. Other enrichment ideas such as footballs can be provided, but as pigs are so clever it is important to swap out enrichment regularly so he doesn't become bored.
Tommy will need continuous access to windproof and waterproof covered shelter or accommodation, which should have a thermally comfortable environment at all times. Wood shelters or plastic insulated ones are preferable as they enable pigs to keep cool in summer and warm in winter. Tommy will need a clean, dry, well-bedded lying area. When the weather is warm Tommy will need to be provided with a wallow and adequate shelter from the sun, as pigs are prone to sunburn and sunstroke - especially as Boris is a pale coloured pig so will need extra protection from the sun! Tommy also has longer hair than the avergae pig, so it's important to make sure he doesn't overheat. He will need strong but safe fencing surrounding his enclosure to ensure he cannot escape.
There are strict laws regarding the keeping, identification, and transport of Pigs so potential adopters must be aware of this. You will need to: obtain a County Parish Holding (CPH) number prior to adoption, obtain a movement licence - notification must be made prior to movement and can be completed online at http://www.eaml2.org.uk/ami/home.eb, register the pig with DEFRA once she's on your land, and arrange for appropriate transport for the pig e.g. a bedded trailer. Please contact DEFRA if you have any questions regarding the law on keeping pigs.
If you are interested in adopting Tommy Hilpigger, then please get in contact with RSPCA Southridge at firstname.lastname@example.org and someone will be in touch. Please note, he is NOT currently based at RSPCA Southridge Animal Centre and is boarding at a farm in Derby.
