Boris found himself in RSPCA care as a stray way back in November 2018! He has patiently been waiting for his home ever since, and we're hoping someone out there has got space for him!
The farm that has been looking after Boris has said that he is the most gorgeous pig and we happen to agree! They have also said that he's as kind as he is big (and he's quite a big boy!) Pigs are intelligent and social herd animals, so it is very important that Boris be rehomed with at least one other pig. Pigs love to root, and spend approximately 20% of their time rooting, so it's important that Boris is provided with the opportunities to do so. Other enrichment ideas such as footballs can be provided, but as pigs are so clever it is important to swap out enrichment regularly so he doesn't become bored.
Boris will need continuous access to windproof and waterproof covered shelter or accommodation, which should have a thermally comfortable environment at all times. Wood shelters or plastic insulated ones are preferable as they enable pigs to keep cool in summer and warm in winter. Boris will need a clean, dry, well-bedded lying area. When the weather is warm Boris will need to be provided with a wallow and adequate shelter from the sun, as pigs are prone to sunburn and sunstroke - especially as Boris is a pale coloured pig so will need extra protection from the sun! Boris will need strong but safe fencing surrounding his enclosure to ensure he cannot escape.
There are strict laws regarding the keeping, identification, and transport of Pigs so potential adopters must be aware of this. You will need to: obtain a County Parish Holding (CPH) number prior to adoption, obtain a movement licence - notification must be made prior to movement and can be completed online at http://www.eaml2.org.uk/ami/home.eb, register the pig with DEFRA once she's on your land, and arrange for appropriate transport for the pig e.g. a bedded trailer. Please contact DEFRA if you have any questions regarding the law on keeping pigs.
If you are interested in adopting Boris, then please get in contact with RSPCA Southridge at email@example.com and someone will be in touch. Please note, Boris is NOT currently based at RSPCA Southridge Animal Centre and is boarding at a farm in Norfolk. Due to travel complications, potential adopters would ideally be able to provide their own transport to collect Boris or live a reasonable distance from Kings Lynn i.e. within an hour travel.
