A "guard dog" means a dog which is being used to protect:
  • premises
  • property kept on the premises
  • a person guarding the premises or such property.

The Guard Dogs Act 1975 was introduced to control the use of guard dogs.

    The law states that:
  • if a guard dog is in use at any premises, then a warning sign to that effect is clearly posted at each entrance to the premises
  • if the dog is off the leash, that a handler must be present and in control of the dog
  • if the handler is not present, then the dog is secured and not at liberty to go freely about the premises.
