Pets - Dogs

There are two main parts to this Act - the first relates to types of dogs which are bred for fighting. Possession of such dogs is unlawful unless the owner has obtained a certificate of exemption and the dog is microchipped, neutered and insured. The dog must be muzzled and on a lead in public places and be in the charge of someone who is at least 16 years old.

The dogs covered by the Act are:

  • PIT BULL TERRIER (American)
  • JAPANESE TOSA
  • DOGO ARGENTINO
  • FILA BRAZILIERO

The second part of the Act relates to keeping dogs of any type whatsoever under proper control. An offence is committed if dogs are not kept under proper control.

The Dogs Act 1871 is still in force and this also provides the Courts with a remedy for dealing with dangerous dogs.
