The BVA(AWF)/FRAME/RSPCA/UFAW Joint Working Group on Refinement
The Joint Working Group on Refinement(JWGR) was convened by the *BVA(AWF), FRAME, RSPCA and UFAW to facilitate refinement by ensuring that up-to-date information on refinement is available. The JWGR encompasses a broad range of membership with representatives from science and industry, veterinarians and animal welfare. It has produced a series of comprehensive reports setting out good practice for a range of husbandry and care practices and experimental procedures that should lead to significant reductions in the overall impact of research on animals.
These reports are aimed at an international readership and are intended to help inform scientists, animal technicians, veterinarians and members of ethics or animal care and use committees.
The reports of the JWGR are published in the journal Laboratory Animals and have been disseminated to researchers and animal carers in countries all over the world.
Topics covered to date are:
blood sampling
rabbit husbandry
mouse husbandry
administration of substances
laboratory birds - refinements in husbandry and procedures
refinement and reduction in the production of GM mice
refinements in telemetry procedures
refinements in husbandry of animals involved in telemetry procedures
dog husbandry
primate husbandry (in preparation)
