Focus on Alternatives brings together UK non-profit organisations that promote the development and acceptance of humane alternatives to animals in research, testing and education.

The group organises workshops and meetings to explore the potential for replacement in specific areas of animal use, produces reports and resources for researchers, and lobbies for greater uptake of humane alternatives.

Current members of Focus on Alternatives include the RSPCA, Dr Hadwen Trust, Fund for the Replacement of Animals in Medical Experiments, The Humane Research Trust, UK Human Tissue Bank, St Andrew Animal Fund and the Lord Dowding Fund.

Examples of issues addressed by Focus on Alternatives include:

  • replacing pain research on animals

  • the use of animal derived serum in cell culture – the group has produced a resource listing suppliers of serum-free media

  • human tissue donation for use in research

  • replacing animals in septic shock research.
