Sam Gaines is the acting head of the companion animals department and joined the RSPCA in February 2009.

She currently works on a range of issues which affect pet dog welfare including housing, husbandry, training and behavioural modification.

Prior to joining the RSPCA, Sam first gained an MSc in applied animal behaviour and welfare and then spent eight years studying the welfare, behaviour and performance of military and police working dogs.

During this time, Sam also gained a PhD in dog welfare from the University of Bristol.  Her research assessed and compared different indicators of kennelled dog welfare and explored their relationships with aspects of housing and husbandry.  Findings from Sam's research have been presented internationally and published in scientific journals.  They have also been used to help improve the welfare of working dogs across the UK and abroad.
