Inspector rescuing swan © RSPCA

A mute swan has been reunited with his mate after being rescued from the snow in an empty warehouse in Cefndy Road in Rhyl, North Wales.

We were called out last Monday, 21 January, after members of the public raised concerns about the adult bird which was trapped in the yard of a disused part of an industrial estate.

The swan was uninjured but unable to escape because there was not enough room for a runway for take-off. Our officers managed to catch him and return him to the nine other swans in the area next door, one of which is believed to be his mate.

Trainee Inspector Jamie Godfrey said:

This poor swan would not have been able to get out of that tiny yard without help.

It had a gated entrance where no-one entered. There was grass for him to graze but he would have been left to a lonely life if we had not intervened.

Who knows how the bird got in there.

Swans have been known to crash land on roads and greenhouses during rainy and snowy weather as reflections can lead them to mistake puddles for lakes.

It is possible that is what may have happened on this day as it was very snowy.

It was really heartwarming to see the swan reunited with his mate outside. They walked around each other a bit flapping their wings then grunted a greeting at each other.
