Inspector completes 'challenge of a lifetime'

An RSPCA inspector has completed a staggering 1,425 mile run from Durban to Cape Town in aid of one of our wildlife centres. It’s thought she is the first woman to take on the ‘Freedom Trail’ which saw her do more than 25 miles a day for 46 days.

Emma Timmis from Sandbach, Cheshire is raising money for Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in nearby Nantwich.

Running the Freedom Trail

Emma, who lives in Sandbach, Cheshire, said:

"This is the biggest thing I’ve ever done and I am really proud of what I’ve achieved.

"South Africa is a beautiful country and the people were so hospitable and kind, I think that was the best thing about it.

"Whilst it was hard, I never thought 'I want to stop' – the constantly changing weather was a real challenge, some days it was hot and humid, others it was cold and foggy."

Supporting our work with wildlife

Emma set herself a sponsorship target of £15,000 for the challenge, every penny of which will go towards the rehabilitation and release of injured wildlife at Stapeley Grange.

Emma said:

I chose to raise money specifically for Stapeley Grange as I think people often give money for cats and dogs and wildlife can be forgotten.

All of the money will go to their 'equipment fund'. They desperately need to raise £4,000 to renovate their mammal sheds which house a variety of orphaned and rescued wildlife casualties.

They also need a new anaesthetic machine, oxygen concentrators, matting for outside pools where hundreds of waterfowl are cared for each year, plus radio tracking equipment. This is on top of the basic equipment needed to feed and house the animals.

So far, Emma’s fund stands at just over £3,000 but its hoped donations will keep coming in and Emma is planning on organising more fundraising events to reach her goal.
