One thousand cats across London in need of new homes

Can you offer a home to an unwanted cat or kitten?

23.09.11

We are looking to find homes for 1,000 cats across London over the next month following one of our busiest summers ever with more unwanted cats and kittens than ever before.

RSPCA animal centres and hospitals across London are all full of cats with no space to take in new animals that need our help.

Many of the animals are being kept in private boarding or in foster homes as our centres are simply too full. New owners are desperately needed to provide permanent, loving homes for them.

Joint effort to find homes for cats most in need

Our 16 branches across the capital have joined together to simplify the adoption process and make it easier for people to give a new life to an RSPCA cat.

Most of the cats have had the worst possible start in life and are simply looking for someone to love them.

The cats all have their own sad story about how they came to be in RSPCA care, but all have one thing in common - they are looking to be given a second chance in life and simply want a loving home.

RSPCA London branches advisor, Becky Kenny, said:

These cats are the most in need in London - the ones that really need to be given a chance.

It is all too easy to just go and buy a cat, but if you offer a home to an RSPCA cat you know you are doing an amazing thing and making a huge difference to a cat's life.

And now we have made the adoption process so much easier.

Boris

We rescued black cat Boris after gangs of youths began setting their dogs on him.

Neighbours on the estate in Stoke Newington, North London, called the RSPCA to help the terrified stray after he became a target for teenagers.

The one-year-old cat ran for his life each time he was confronted by snarling dogs and was living in fear.

Jenny Eden, manager of the RSPCA Central and North East London Branch, said:

If we hadn't picked Boris up when we did he would have been torn to pieces.

He is a gorgeous, friendly cat and he's now looking for a loving home.

Kittens dumped in a box outside a factory in Tottenham © Jenny Eden / RSPCA

These four kittens were found dumped in a cardboard box outside a factory in Tottenham, Greater London, at just six weeks old.

They were discovered hungry and cold when workers arrived for work in the morning.

The kittens have now recovered from their ordeal and are looking for permanent new homes.

Jenny said:

This is the second time in a few months that kittens have been left on the doorstep of this particular factory.

We believe they were left there late the night before so they were lucky to have survived.

We are appealing to the owner of the kittens' mum to let us help by neutering their cat to prevent this happening again.

A nationwide problem

The RSPCA in London, in partnership with other organisations, has neutered more than 10,000 cats over the past year, to help reduce the number of unwanted litters in the capital.

But, sadly, the overpopulation of cats isn't just isolated to London and is affecting our animal centres and branches all over England and Wales.
