The much-loved actress June Brown, who plays Dot Branning (formerly Cotton) in EastEnders, paid a surprise flying visit to our Woodchurch Animal Centre whilst in the area last weekend.
June, who is a patron of the animal centre in Birchington, Kent (formerly the RSPCA East Kent Animal Centre), was very impressed with its facilities and care.
The centre, which is run by the RSPCA Kent - Isle of Thanet Branch, is still in the process of being built. It is a major project for the branch, and being responsible for its own funding, it has relied on the support and generosity of volunteers and local people.
Building started in January 2006 and the centre continues to be built in phases as money becomes available. The next phase of building when enough funds have been raised will be for a block of dog kennels, followed by a further cattery and purpose-built accommodation for small animals such as rabbits and rodents.
June was amazed at what has been achieved for the building project so far by such a small group of local volunteers and hopes to see it grow in the future.
Her delightful sense of humour soon had centre staff and volunteers laughing, and they hope it won’t be too long before they have the pleasure of her company again.
The Isle of Thanet Branch would like to thank June very much for taking the time to visit the animal centre during her busy schedule.
June Brown is one of four patrons of the branch. The other patrons are Suzy Gale (wife of Roger Gale MP), and comedians Dave Lee MBE and Paul O'Grady.
RSPCA Woodchurch Animal Centre will be built in phases as funding becomes available. To find out more about the project and how you can help, please contact the centre on 01843 826180 between 11.30am and 2pm (closed Wednesdays).
