Can you give a home to an abandoned kitten?
29.08.11
Many of our branches and animal centres are full to capacity with unwanted cats and kittens, a large number of which have been abandoned.
In one week alone our Buckinghamshire South Branch stepped in to help eight abandoned kittens and they now have 13 all in desperate need of new homes, not to mention the 12 cats already in their care.
The branch, which usually only deals with a handful of cats each month, is now full to capacity and will not be able to take any more cats and kittens until new homes can be found for the current ones in their care.
In Peterborough, on Monday, 15 August, we received calls about five kittens dumped in different locations in just one day.
Two male ginger kittens were dumped in a cardboard box in a park in Bretton Field, two next to a vets in Bretton, and a further cat was dumped at a vet surgery in the Broadway area. All of the kittens are believed to be less than eight weeks old.
The two kittens dumped near the vets in Bretton have been taken in by staff and will be rehomed. The remaining kittens have been taken into the care of the Peterborough and District Branch bringing the total number of cats and kittens in their care to 27.
RSPCA animal welfare officer Kathy Horning said:
It just shows the scale of the problem at the moment. But, even if people are struggling financially to cope with their pets, this is not the way to deal with it.
We would once again remind people to get their cats and kittens neutered to help reduce the numbers of unwanted felines.
Fortunately in each of these cases they were all discovered, but who knows what would have happened to them if nobody had found them.
Can you adopt a cat or kitten?
Our branches and animal centres are bursting at the seams with cats and kittens looking for new homes. Including Bella, pictured right, who was found at a glass recycling depot.
Joan Johnson, from our Buckinghamshire South Branch, said:
We have so many kittens at the moment we really don’t know what to do. We're dealing with a crisis and we really need the public’s help.
We have an unprecedented number of cats and kittens in our care and we need to find new homes for them fast, because we don’t have the room to take in any more cats at the moment.
We would appeal to anyone who is considering buying a cat or kitten to come to us first rather than answering an ad, we have to find homes for these poor kittens.
Adopt a cat or kitten from us. Find your perfect cat or kitten using our pet search.
Think first...
Please remember that pet ownership takes time, money, commitment and patience - owning a pet is likely to change your life completely. Our pets pages can help you to understand the care that cats need.
If you find an animal you want to offer a home to at one of our centres, the centre's staff will need to make sure the animal is suitable for your circumstances. This process will include a home visit.
Can’t offer a cat a permanent home?
Consider fostering instead.
If you're unable to offer a cat a permanent home, consider fostering for us instead, it really is worthwhile and would make a huge difference to an animal’s life.
Fostering is an interesting, varied and rewarding job. Find out more about volunteer fostering.
