Key activities

At RSPCA Bristol & District Branch and Bristol Dogs and Cats Home we have a calendar of events and activities which help us raise the profile of the charity or raise funds for our work. These would not be possible without a dedicated team of volunteers.

Tasks can include running a promotional stall, stewarding at events, selling tickets, meeting and greeting, selling merchandise, serving tea and cakes, baking cakes or growing plants, setting up for events and site preparation, face painting and holding donation tins at organised collections.

Times & preferred duration of commitment

Volunteering takes place on an ad-hoc basis as the calendar of events can very throughout the year. You will be contacted in advance to request your help.

Times can very but there is usually a minimum of 2 hours requested. Fundraising events and activities tend to take place at weekends and evenings. You'll be given a specific briefing before each event.

Experience / skills / knowledge / personal qualities required

To be a member of this team you will need a friendly, outgoing personality in order to engage with the public on our behalf, and flexibility as to what tasks you undertake and what hours you volunteer.

As a fundraising volunteer you will be a representative of the Charity in public and will therefore need the ability to communicate with the public in a professional manner. You will need basic financial skills for giving change and be willing to undertake training on tills and show equipment if necessary.

The ability to lift and handle boxes and event equipment and to adapt to different show situations is required. You will need to be able to cope well under pressure at times, with tact, diplomacy and enthusiasm.

The willingness to travel to the event and help clear up afterwards is important. Own transportation is an advantage and an ability to help transport material for the event may be required in some cases, but not all. Some events require volunteers to travel to the event independently and run the stand with a fellow volunteer.
