Our history
History of Harmsworth Memorial Animal Hospital
Harmsworth Memorial Animal Hospital, located in Holloway, North London, was built in 1968 using money left by Sir Harold Harmsworth in his will.
Sir Harold Harmsworth, an animal lover who came from a prominent publishing family, wanted to provide a place where people who lived in the area could receive veterinary treatment for their pets.
The RSPCA has funded the hospital since 1968, providing a low-cost veterinary service to people on low incomes in the surrounding community.
During the 1990s the work of the RSPCA-funded animal hospitals was featured in the BBC programme, Animal Hospital, hosted by Rolf Harris. The programme spanned 10 years, and a number of series were filmed at Harmsworth Memorial Animal Hospital.
The hospital has links with the Royal Veterinary College and the Veterinary College of Bristol University. Up to 20 veterinary students a year spend time at the hospital learning about active animal welfare.
