RSPCA animal rescues can be a tricky business. We are called out to rescue animals from all sorts of sticky situations. So what is it that goes on behind the scenes that makes us so good at what we do?
The right people
Our officers need to be physically fit and have excellent problem solving skills to safely rescue animals from the predicaments they find themselves in.
There are of course some cases where we have to rescue animals from owners who are unable or unwilling to care for them properly. These delicate situations can call on an officers tact and diplomacy.
A lot of love
Whether it’s a cat stranded in a tree; a deer involved in a road traffic accident; or a sheep that has fallen down a cliff; the animals we rescue are often reluctant to be helped.
Training in animal handling and first aid is essential and so is a love of the job, especially when the animal you are trying to help is struggling to escape your grasp any way it can!
Team work
No man is an island, and neither is an RSPCA officer. Our officers call on each other for support, assistance and advice. We are also lucky enough to receive support from many organisations including local councils, the Fire and Rescue Service and the Police.
Practice makes perfect
Put simply, our frontline staff are trained to deal with rescue situations. The training they receive builds upon their natural abilities and ensures they know the correct techniques to rescue animals safely.
Then they practice! Regular practice of skills they have learnt using ropes, boats and ladders keeps their rescue skills sharp and effective.
So if you ever find an animal in need of a little assistance you know that they will be in safe hands with us.
