Ebony, Lily, Two-tone, Joy, Casper, Romeo and Merlin were all found emaciated in a muddy field with virtually no grass to graze on.
The bones of these neglected horses were clearly visible. The majority of them had damage to the front of their teeth where they had scraped them along the ground and surrounding fences in search of something to eat.
Sadly two other horses found partially covered in the field had already died.
Neglect could have been avoided
The owners of these unfortunate horses pleaded guilty to four charges. Each relating to causing unnecessary suffering and failing to provide the horses with adequate nutrition for their needs.
The pair were each jailed for four months and banned from keeping horses for 10 years.
RSPCA Inspector Sue Haywood said:
These horses were left to suffer for a long period of time, but had the defendants taken action sooner then this neglect could have been avoided.
It cost us £18,000 to board the horses whilst we prosecuted their owners.
Each horse has since made a full recovery, and was able to join other horses and ponies ready for rehoming.
