Two men jailed for gross cruelty to dog
Maggie May was the victim of an horrific case of animal cruelty and endured a tremendous amount of suffering at the hands of her previous owner and his friends.
Two men were jailed for 18 weeks and banned from keeping animals for life by Newton Aycliff Magistrates' Court in August 2011 after they admitted causing the lurcher type dog to suffer unnecessarily.
Maggie May's ordeal
When six-month-old Maggie May was run over by a car her owner decided to tie chopsticks to her broken leg with sellotape rather than seek veterinary treatment for her.
The following day two friends of the owner decided to put Maggie May out of her misery and kill her.
The men stood on the dog and forced her back legs over her head, breaking her neck. She was then stabbed several times with a potato peeler by one of the defendants and dumped on a grass verge in Ferryhill, County Durham, to die.
A miracle survivor
Despite her horrific ordeal, Maggie May beat all the odds and survived. Her broken leg had to be amputated, but she was rehomed after receiving extensive veterinary care.
RSPCA Inspector Claire Wilson said:
"It’s difficult to comprehend what this poor dog went through.
"However, the fact that she has survived and continues to be very loving towards people is testament to everyone who has helped her to recover."
Maggie May now lives with five doggy friends in a caring and happy new home.
