Pledge 4
  • The pledge

We pledge to reduce the number of animals in the UK who undergo severe suffering when used in experiments.
  • The problem

The level of pain or distress suffered by animals used in experiments depends on the nature of the research. And under UK law is classified as mild, moderate or substantial (severe).

Any level of suffering is a concern for us, but ending severe suffering is a top priority.
  • What are the trends?

New legislation to be implemented by 2013 will record the number of animals experiencing each level of suffering in the future. Click here to see the trends for substantial severity projects in the UK 1998-2011.

Currently the UK Home Office annual statistics only indicate the number of 'projects' that are in the substantial (severe) severity band. This means that we don't know how many animals actually experience severe suffering. However, this will change with a new UK law on animal use, which will require actual suffering to be reported from 2014. This means that we will be able to track the impact of our efforts and monitor progress towards the end of severe suffering for laboratory animals.

  • What we would like to see

An end to severe suffering.Accurate reporting of the actual number of animals experiencing mild, moderate or severe suffering.
  • What we're doing

Argue for clear guidance on assessing, classifying and monitoring suffering. With details of the number of animals experiencing each level of suffering to be made publicly available. Identify and promote practical steps to replace severe procedures with more humane methods. Increase awareness of the issue within science and industry.
  • What you can do

Make the government aware of your views and concerns about animal research and testing. Especially the issue of severe suffering.Write to your MP and the Ministers responsible.Make sure you are aware of the price animals pay for medical research, the pursuit of knowledge and the drive to market new chemicals and products.Support our work on animal experiments by making a donation, volunteering and helping with our campaigns.

I support the pledge to reduce the number of animals suffering in experiments.
