Pledge 2
  • The pledge

We pledge to end the euthanasia of any rehomeable animal.
  • The problem

Because there are too many animals and too few good homes available, sometimes we just cannot rehome animals that should be given another chance.

Although we hate having to do it, we have no option but to put them to sleep.
  • What are the trends?

The overall trend in the euthanasia of rehomeable cats and dogs has gone down over the past 20 years. In 2011 the number of rehomeable dogs euthanased dropped by 13 percent to 625 animals. The number of rehomeable cats euthanased dropped by 51 percent to 667 (after rises in both cats and dogs in 2010).The number of rabbits euthanased increased slightly to 91. • What we would like to see

Fewer cats, dogs and rabbits needing to be rescued in the first place.More good homes available for rehoming animals.More people choosing RSPCA animals as pets.A drop in the number of rehomeable animals being euthanased.
  • What we're doing

Increase the number of animals we rehome, by improving our customer care.Reduce the number of animals that are returned to our centres and branches by providing better support for adopters.Develop fostering programmes for those animals looking for new homes. Promote microchipping to help reunite stray animals with their owners. And reduce the number of unclaimed animals.
  • What you can do

Plan ahead and plan carefully. Remember that getting a pet is a long-term commitment.Make sure you understand what a pet will need before you get one.Get your pet from us if you can. Get your pet neutered and microchipped. Find out about your pet's needs.Support our work by making donation, volunteering and helping with our campaigns.

I support the pledge to end the euthanasia of rehomable animals.
