Pledge 1
  • The pledge

We pledge to end the overpopulation of companion animals and tackle the related issues.
  • The problem

Too many animals, particularly of certain breeds, are bred without thought for their future. They end up being owned by people who can't provide for their needs.

Many pets are abandoned or find themselves in our care or that of other welfare organisations.
  • What are the trends?

The number of stray dogs being picked up by local authorities rose in 2010/11.In 2011 we took in and rehomed 12711 dogs (down 667 from 2010). We also took in and rehomed 30703 cats (down 2491 from 2010). We still have hundreds of cats, dogs and rabbits that have to be held outside the RSPCA, as there are no spaces available in our own centres. The number of dogs and rabbits on our waiting lists fell.In 2010 cats on waiting list was 170 (which is up 91 from 2009), and in 2011 cats on waiting list were 128 (down 42 from 2010). • What we would like to see

Declining number of abandoned stray dogs.Fewer cats, dogs and rabbits being taken to our centres.Fewer animals on our waiting lists because there is no space in our centres.
  • What we're doing

Educate prospective pet owners in communities that need most support.Work with companies to improve internet selling policies and promote neutering.Work with governments to improve standards of dog breeding and reduce the number of dogs coming onto the market. Understand why people get pets.Improve pet information, so owners make good decisions when getting a pet.Encourage prospective owners to get their pets from us.
  • What you can do

Plan ahead and plan carefully. Getting a pet is a long-term commitment.Make sure you understand what a pet will need before you get one.Rehome your pet from us if you can.Get your pet neutered and microchipped.Find out about your pet's needs.Support our work by making a donation, volunteering and helping with our campaigns.

I pledge to help end the overpopulation of pets.
