Consultancy

As the world’s foremost animal welfare organisation, with complete independence from government funding and control, we are in a unique position to bring a full range of expertise to collaborative projects on a consultancy basis.

Law enforcement training in Japan

In February 2011 and February 2009, we ran law enforcement training courses in Osaka and Tokyo in collaboration with the Japan Animal Welfare Society. This included modules on the basics of animal welfare, working as an inspector, successful investigation and prosecution techniques, animal welfare education, and our case studies.

The most recent course in Osaka was attended by a representative from the Ministry of the Environment which is in the process of revising animal welfare legislation, and now planning to send delegates on a study visit to the UK in collaboration with our work.

Shelter management consultancy in Sharjah

In 2009, RSPCA International worked with the new municipal shelter in Sharjah, UAE, to determine the requirements of their stray animal strategy by discussing Sharjah’s current stray dog and cat population levels, the welfare problems these animals face, the problems caused by the stray animals and current stray animal control practices. We visited areas frequented by stray animals to determine how best to deploy catching teams.

We assessed the current cat accommodation facilities and the proposed design for the dog accommodation. We also provided advice on standard operating procedures (SOPs) for daily routines, health and safety procedures, and policies on neutering, euthanasia and rehoming.

At the end of the consultancy we produced a comprehensive written report which assessed Sharjah municipality’s stray animal strategy requirements and made recommendations relating to the establishment and management of the cat and dog shelter. Finally we provided advice on the format and content of an animal welfare education programme to be run from the shelter, and later to be taken into schools.
