The RSPCA, the World’s largest and oldest animal welfare organisation, is looking for trainee inspectors.


The main responsibilities of the post include:

  • The promotion of good practice and compassion towards animals and their welfare.
  • The investigation of allegations of animal cruelty. To act or proceed according to law and due process to prevent suffering.
  • Rescuing or collecting animals in immediate or potential risk.


The successful applicant should have:

  1. A minimum 5 GCSE’s - Grade C or above or the equivalent, to include English and Maths.
  2. A full, current, UK licence to drive a car with a manual gearbox.
  3. The ability to swim 50 metres fully clothed within 2.5 minutes.
  4. A good level of physical fitness.
  5. Proven experience of working both as part of a team and independently.
  6. Proven interpersonal skills – experience in the successful management of complex people facing situations is essential.
  7. Experience of working with a variety of animals.
  8. Proven administrative skills.
  9. The flexibility to work unsociable hours including some evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays
  10. The ability to relocate anywhere within England or Wales.

The successful applicant must be prepared to undertake a seven months intensive training course at the Society’s office in Sussex, and elsewhere. Accommodation whilst training will be provided by the Society. The course will comprise a range of legislative, technical and practical training, and will be assessed by written and practical examinations throughout. Successful candidates will be required to pass all examinations to qualify as an Inspector. In exceptional circumstances a single exam re-sit may be permitted, but this is at the Society’s discretion. A failure to successfully meet the assessment standards will result in termination of employment.


At the conclusion of the basic training period you will be posted to an operational work area. Although you will be tasked as an Inspector, you will be required to complete additional work-placed training units before the expiration of 12 months from the date of the commencement of your employment. At the satisfactory completion of your training, including the work-placed units, you will graduate from the training course with a level 3 Diploma, at the rank of Inspector.
