Rooting for pigs

Adult sow and piglet in Freedom Food accredited farm Ä Andrew Forsyth

We’re a nation of pig lovers, from Miss Piggy in the Muppets to Piglet from Winnie the Pooh; we can’t get enough of the pink little creatures, and as a nation we’re certainly fans of a bacon sandwich or two! What many are unaware of, however, are the harsh conditions suffered by millions of pigs worldwide.

In modern farming systems, pigs are often confined to tiny living spaces for extended periods, completely restricting movement and natural behaviour. They are often subjected to overcrowding, lack of bedding material, tail docking and castration without anaesthetic. In many intelligence tests, pigs outperform dogs and without appropriate environmental enrichment, behavioural issues can arise, causing frustration, boredom and even mental distress.
