What has the RSPCA done?

In 2011 the RSPCA, Compassion in World Farming, WSPA, the Humane Society of the US and Partnership for Animals agreed a joint declaration stating that feeding the world's population is one of the greatest challenges we face, but that using resource-intensive livestock farming is unsustainable and all governments should encourage humane and sustainable farming systems.

Our clear position is that ‘intensive’ farms, where the environment and management prevents the performance of normal behaviours by the animals to such an extent that their welfare is compromised - are unacceptable and the planning process must take account of this.

As the government in England is looking at amending and improving the planning system, in May 2011 we wrote to Eric Pickles, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. We highlighted the need for animal welfare to be a ‘material consideration’ in applications for either farm or companion animals housing, such as kennels, catteries or farms.

Where appropriate we have submitted our concerns about specific applications.
