Rabbits farmed for meat

In 2011 planning applications for a number of rabbit farms across the UK brought the farming of rabbits for meat to the public's attention. Many people don’t realise that the majority of the small amount of rabbit meat sold in the UK comes from farmed rabbits and not from rabbits caught or killed in the wild. Although the UK rabbit farming industry is fairly small-scale, in the EU as a whole over 375 million rabbits are slaughtered every year.

We have some serious concerns about the cage systems that are used to house rabbits on many farms. We believe that all rabbits should be kept in well-managed higher welfare systems that allow them to behave normally and better meet their physical needs.
